Blood plasma is a yellowish liquid component of blood that holds the blood cells of whole blood in suspension. It is the liquid part of the blood that carries cells and proteins throughout the body. It makes up about 55% of the body’s total blood volume. It is the intravascular fluid part of extracellular fluid (all body fluid outside cells). It is mostly water (up to 95% by volume) and contains important dissolved proteins (6–8%) (e.g., serum albumins, globulins, and fibrinogen), glucose, clotting factors, electrolytes (Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, HCO₃⁻, Cl⁻, etc.), hormones, carbon dioxide (plasma being the main medium for excretory product transportation), and oxygen. It plays a vital role in an intravascular osmotic effect that keeps electrolyte concentration balanced and protects the body from infection and other blood disorders.

Artificial blood is a product made to act as a substitute for red blood cells. While true blood serves many different functions, artificial blood is designed for the sole purpose of transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body. Blood is composed of a watery substance called plasma as well as three different types of cells or parts of cells that float in the plasma. The formed elements are red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets.

White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system that destroys viruses and bacteria, the pathogens that cause infections. Platelets form clots to prevent bleeding from cuts and small wounds. RBCs account for more than 90% of the formed elements in the blood.

These abundant cells transport oxygen and carbon dioxide via blood vessels called arteries and veins. RBCs are disc-shaped with a large surface area for absorbing and releasing oxygen.

These cells do not have a nucleus in the center, but instead, contain a complex molecule — hemoglobin (Hb) — that collects and releases oxygen.
